Frequently asked questions

Adhan notifications don’t arrive on my Android phone. What should I do?
  • Make sure notifications are allowed for Sakina in system settings (Apps → Sakina → Notifications) and that the prayer isn’t set to Off inside the app.
  • Turn off battery optimisation for Sakina: Settings → Apps → Sakina → Battery → Unrestricted (names vary by device). Some manufacturers aggressively stop background alarms — add Sakina to the “never sleeping” apps and allow auto-start if that option exists.
  • Allow the “Alarms & reminders” permission (see the next question).
  • Open the app now and then; it reschedules upcoming alerts every time it opens.
What is the “Alarms & reminders” permission and why does Sakina ask for it?

Android 12 and later require this permission for alarms at an exact time. Without it, Android may delay notifications by several minutes. To grant it: Settings → Apps → Special app access → Alarms & reminders → Sakina. Sakina uses it for prayer times only; if you decline, alerts still work but at approximate times.

Notifications don’t arrive on my iPhone or iPad.
  • Settings → Notifications → Sakina: turn on Allow Notifications and Sounds.
  • If a Focus or Do Not Disturb is on, add Sakina to its allowed apps or turn it off.
  • If you use Scheduled Summary, exclude Sakina from it.
  • The adhan sound won’t play while the device is in silent mode.
  • iOS limits how many notifications an app can schedule in advance, so Sakina schedules the next few days at a time. Open the app every few days to refresh the schedule; it will remind you before the scheduled alerts run out.
Prayer times differ from my mosque.

In the app’s prayer settings:

  • Check that your location or city is correct.
  • Choose the calculation method used by your local authority (a default is chosen for your country; you can change it).
  • Asr madhab: Hanafi gives a later Asr time than the majority opinion.
  • High-latitude rule: important far north or south, especially for Fajr and Isha in summer.
  • Use the per-prayer offsets (−30 to +30 minutes) to match your mosque exactly.
The Hijri date is a day ahead or behind.

The app calculates the date with the Umm al-Qura calendar, which may differ from moon sighting where you live. Go to Settings → Hijri adjustment and choose −2 to +2 days.

The Qibla compass seems inaccurate.
  • Calibrate the compass by moving your device through the air in a figure-8 a few times.
  • Hold the device flat and away from metal, magnets, speakers, laptops and cars; remove any magnetic case or mount.
  • Check that your location or city is correct.
  • Some tablets have no compass sensor; on those, the app shows the Qibla bearing in degrees from North instead.
Does Sakina work without internet?

Yes. Azkar, Quran text, search and bookmarks, prayer times, adhan notifications, the Qibla compass and Tasbih all work offline. GPS does not need internet either. Only Quran audio and the Qibla map view need a connection.

Quran audio won’t play.

Quran audio needs an internet connection because it is streamed from EveryAyah.com. Check your connection. While online, you can download a surah to listen to later without internet.

How do I change the language?

In the app: More → Settings → Language, then choose العربية or English. On this website, use the language button at the top of the page.

What data does Sakina collect?

None. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Location is used only on your device and notifications are local. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

How do I delete my data?

All your data lives only on your device, and uninstalling the app deletes all of it. On Android you can also clear it via Settings → Apps → Sakina → Storage → Clear data. You can revoke location permission at any time. We hold no data about you to delete.

Why did my azkar progress reset?

Morning azkar reset automatically at Fajr and evening azkar at Asr, so each day starts fresh.

I found an error in the Quran text or a zikr.

The Quran text is reproduced verbatim from the Tanzil Project and the azkar come from Hisn al-Muslim. If you think something is wrong, email us with the surah and ayah number or the name of the zikr, and we will check it against the source.

Does it work on iPad and foldables?

Yes. The layout adapts to the screen size, and the mushaf shows two facing pages on wide screens such as an iPad in landscape or an unfolded foldable.
